The Colony Grill Room is the main restaurant of the 73-room Beaumont Hotel, the first such venture from experienced restaurateurs Corbin & King (of The Delaunay, The Wolseley, Fischers, Zedel and Colbert). The building dates back to 1927 and was originally a full service garage for Selfridges, and more recently an Avis car hire building. The hotel offers a cocktail bar, a restaurant, a cozy and quiet lobby and a sunny terrace for relaxing our guests. Located in Rome, in the theater district, near museums and galleries, the Colony hotel is located just minutes from the oldest part of the city. 1) This may be a members’ club in Mayfair, but you’re still invited. The Colony Club isn’t a turn-your-nose-up-at-the-common-folk kind of place. Quite the contrary.
2) The casino may be the main attraction to most of the clientele, but it’s the restaurant that’s the true star.
3) You will feel like a celebrity when the attentive staff act like your entourage as you’re waltzed upstairs to your table.
4) Tom, Dick or Harry may not frequent here (it is a member’s club after all), but Thomas, Richard and Henry are just as charming. Dress smart, suits with pocket squares and polished brogues; ladies, dress for the casino, sleek and elegant. Bare shoulders acceptable.
5) If you’re on a date and you’re trying to wine and dine your future mister or misses, try to get the corner seat. You can both sit on the plush sofa seating and get a little closer without even trying. However, if you’re on a business meeting, choose to sit opposite each other. If business talk gets heavy, you may need that table distance between you.
6) The menu is vast, but even if you don’t see anything on it that you really want, the kitchen can prepare anything you want; except pizza.
7) For starters, order the langoustine from the European menu. WARNING! The bed of black squid ink orzo stains teeth and lips. It’s easy to wipe off, but you’ll initially look like you tried to work the goth lip look and failed miserably (which is exactly what goths try to achieve, so in a way you’ll have succeeded).
8) Trust the waiters and their recommendation on the specials. If they say the duck is delicious, the duck is delicious. An old favourite is the baby chicken stuffed with rice and roasted until it’s gorgeously golden. Veggies, opt for the truffled scrambled eggs. Delightful!
9) The Middle Eastern menu is all halal. A courteous nod to the clientele’s multicultural mix. Sushi lovers get to dine in a separate bar and watch the chef cut and slice his way through a fish with artistic flair.
10) Don’t wear anything tight. Pudding is excessive. The bill comes with a selection of chocolates. You will struggle to walk for a while. Luckily, the casino is a good resting spot, but you may end up losing the wrong kind of pounds....read more
